Nasinu was declared a Millennium Town on 1st of January 2000 as per the provisions of Local Government (LG) Act Cap 125 vides the legal notice number 155. However the Town of Nasinu Order 2000 was made on 23 of December 1999. With the rapid pace of development witnessed in the 1st Decade, Nasinu is gearing up to become a City in very near future. Today Nasinu is the largest Municipality of Fiji in terms of Population size, Geographical size, as well as number of ratepayers; even surpassing that of the Capital City Suva and Sugar City Lautoka.
An Interim Committee chaired by Mr. Ajay Kumar with 20 members was appointed on 31st of December 1999, under the legal provisions in section 5(2) of the LG Act. Initially only two officers were appointed (Town Clerk and health Inspector/Building Surveyor). One of the key responsibility of this committee was to prepare a corporate plan, which was successfully accomplished under the support and guidance provided by an ESCAP consultant, Mr. Serge Belloni.
The Interim Committee took over the assets and liabilities and functions from Suva and Nausori Rural Authorities on 2nd of September 2000 through the Local Government (Nasinu- Interim Committee) Regulation 2000, made vide Legal Notice No: 99 dated 25th August 2000.
The first elections were held in 2003, whereby people of Nasinu elected 21 member Councilors, from 7 wards, led by His worship Mr. Joji Taholo. The second election was held in 2005, which resulted in change in leadership to his worship Mr. Rajeshwar Kumar. The terms of the Councilors ended on 31st January 2009 with the Promulgation of relevant Decree and a Special Administrator was appointed. Today the affairs of the Municipality are administered by the Special Administrator, Chief Executive Officer, four (4) Heads of Department, and 80 Council Employees.
Nasinu is located at latitude of 18.08°S and 178.50°E longitude, south of equator and west of dateline. It has the largest municipal area in Fiji with its land area of 78.3 km² which is twice the size of Suva. The current population is estimated to be around 120,000 people with and annual population growth rate of 2% per annum.
The municipality boundary starts from Samabula Bridge and Nokonoko (Baily) bridge to 9 miles Wainibuku Bridge and along Khalsha road till the corner of Kanace road. Initially the boundary included Nakasi area; however this was later placed under the Nausori Town Council.
Nasinu town boundary is divided in seven wards with total number of properties to be around 12,000 while there are 11,819 official ratepayers. Nasinu is also home to approximately 13,000 squatter residents in 20 different squatter settlements and the number is still growing.
